Letterpress, Hot Foil Stamping, Embossing Blind Embossing

Traditional Printing Techniques for Wonderful Tactile Results

For these printing techniques, I use my antique letterpress machines, just like in Gutenberg's time. Among them is my greatest showpiece: my original Heidelberg Platen, built in 1968 and weighing 1.3 tons, as well as my oldest but smallest machine in my collection from 1905.

In the past, these printing techniques used lead type, but nowadays so-called clichés (printing plates) are made for your individual design. These printing plates are then either embossed into the paper with printing ink, foil heat, or without foil but with high pressure, and in the case of embossing, raised out of the paper.

These printing techniques are the most exquisite and popular printing methods for premium stationery of all kinds. Below you will find an overview of the mentioned printing methods.

The letterpress process is the oldest printing method, also known as book printing. Here, the desired design is embossed into the paper using ink, a printing plate, and around 40 tons of printing pressure. Your premium stationery is produced on my original Heidelberg Platen from 1968.

Hot foil stamping is similar to letterpress printing. Instead of ink, a shiny or matte foil, e.g., in gold, rose gold, copper, silver, or even a hologram foil, is used and the motif is embossed into the paper with heat and pressure.

Embossing has become increasingly popular. No wonder, as it is absolutely special! Here, a printing plate and a counter-form are used to emboss the desired lettering or motif upwards out of the paper.

It works in principle like hot foil stamping, except that no foil and no heat are used. The embossing is also tangible and goes into the paper.
